Yamato (ヤマト, Yamato) is an Anbu operative of Konohagakure. He is often seen following Team Guy and appears in every episode as a background character without any lines, speaking only in episode 48 and episode 51.

Background

Kakashi and Yamato as ANBU

Tenzō and Kakashi during their time as Anbu.

At some point in his life, Yamato was given the DNA of the First Hokage to replicate his ability to use Wood Release. In his time with the Anbu, he was in Kakashi Hatake's squad and was identified as Tenzō.

Appearance

Yamato has short spiky brown hair and large, almond-shaped, black eyes. Yamato wore the standard attire of a Konoha-nin with a flak jacket and a happuri style forehead protector that is similar to that worn by the Tobirama Senju.

As an Anbu, Yamato wore the standard attire of the Anbu: a black, sleeveless jumper under a grey flack jacket with strapped-up shinobi sandals, arm-length gloves with guards over them. He carried a sword strapped to his back, and wore a mask that resembles a cat's face covered in green, and red intricate markings, and the Anbu tattoo on his left shoulder.

Personality

Scary Yamato

Yamato's fear face.

Yamato is very discreet and cautious. He usually projects a calm, stoic demeanour. Yamato seems to work well with others as seen when he listened to Lee's ideas to try to fool a few missing-nin. Yamato is not above "ruling by the use of terror" when his team misbehaves. Aside from his obviously intimidating skills as a ninja, however, this "terror" has so far primarily consisted of casting a creepy "ghoul-eyes" expression at his charges. Yamato is also loyal when given orders, no matter how ridiculous the request is, as witness when he sculpted Might Guy's face onto the heads of the Hokage Rock and allowed himself to wear a green jumpsuit that Guy ordered everyone in the village to wear. He can also be easily influenced as he and the rest of the Konoha shinobi were brought to tears thinking that Guy cared about them. This was pushed further when Yamato created multiple heads of Guy out of respect.

In Naruto SD: Rock Lee no Seishun Full-Power Ninden, he has no speaking roles, making him a closed book. However, one thing is for certain is that he desires to speak in the spin-off as shown when he got depressed for landing on a tile that says he won't be able to speak for another year and when he was possessed by Orochimaru, he yelled at the studio for not giving him any lines throughout the whole spin-off. At the end of episode 51, Yamato is shown to be courteous to others feelings as shown when he apologized to the viewers for the actions that transpired in the episode.

Abilities

As a member of the Anbu, Yamato is a highly capable ninja. In the anime, before Lee, Tenten, and Sai left on their mission, Sai mentions that since Yamato will be with them after he finishes with his mission, they have nothing to worry about, indicating that Yamato is very reliable.

Nature Transformation

Wood Release

Yamato's kekkei genkai: Wood Release.

Having the same DNA as Hashirama Senju, Yamato possesses the first's kekkei genkai, the Wood Release. Using this kekkei genkai allows him to combine earth-natured chakra and water to create wood and trees from any surface as well as from his own body.

Wood Release is ideal for capturing, or restraining targets, allowing Yamato to grow wood tendrils from his arms which can be used to trap his enemies.

Four Pillar Oden Shop

Yamato using the Wood Release: Four-Pillar House: Oden Cart Technique.

A less battle-oriented use of his kekkei genkai is Yamato's ability to generate wooden structures almost instantly, such as Wood Release: Four-Pillar House: Oden Cart Technique, an oden shop used to fool enemies, and the Wood Release Fusion Robot: Tenzorn, a large wooden robot to also fool enemies.

Aside from Wood Release, he has some skilled with individual Earth Release techniques, as shown when he used it to create multiple faces of Guy onto the Hokage Rock.

Other Skills

After the stone heads of Guy started to fall down onto Konoha, Yamato demonstrated some skill in taijutsu shown by him using the Dynamic Entry to destroy the heads. He can also merge with the environment to spy undetected or evade attacks.

Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth Full Power Ninja Chronicles

Super Secret Infiltration Mission!!

Yamato is assigned to lead a team consisting of Tenten, Neji Hyūga, and Sai to retrieve a stolen forbidden scroll located at a hideout belonging to missing-nin. However, after Neji is accidently injured by Tonton, Lee, dressed up as an Anbu, substitutes for Neji. Yamato explains to Lee what it means to be an Anbu and tries to calm the three with his fear face. Lee then imitates his fear face and finds that he is just making fun of him.

The team arrives at the hideout and Yamato points out that the real hideout is probably underground. He tells the team to get ready to invade. The team manages to get inside, however, a missing-nin hears noises and comes to their direction. Yamato takes advice from Lee to create an oden cart to fool the missing-nin. Apparently, Lee's idea worked but not for long. Once the missing-nin questioned why an oden shop would be here, Lee advices Yamato to create a giant robot that looks similar to himself. For a moment, the missing-nin were fooled but soon caught on and saw that they were intruders. Yamato manages to restrain them and tells the team to get ready to interrogate them using fear faces. The team finds the scroll, however, the scroll is revealed to be a trap and Lee is caught inside a water prison. Yamato and the others retreat to a safe place. Lee is then found by the rest of the missing-nin and is about to be attacked. However, Yamato and the others arrive to safe Lee. Lee is freed and works together to defeat the missing-nin. With Lee's help, the team manages to escape with the scroll. Once they returned, Yamato asked Tsunade what forbidden technique was contained in the scroll. Ironically, she reveals it to be the robot Yamato made to fool the missing-nin back at the hideout. Yamato and Tenten are then puzzled to hear this.

Naruto SD: Rock Lee no Seishun Full-Power Ninden

Throughout the anime, Yamato makes recent cameos whenever Team Guy are up to their usual antics.

Episode 40

A New Year's Escape Clause

Yamato depressed

Yamato lands on an unfortunate tile.

Yamato participates in a Ultra Serious Game of Life along with the other adults to get out of giving gifts. When it is Yamato turn, he lands on a tile that says he will be unable to speak for another year, causing him to feel depressed.

Episode 42

The Shino Who Loves Insects

As Lee and Team Kurenai are searching for insects for Shino, Lee stumbles upon a rock and lifts it to find Yamato under it. Lee says that this is not Yamato and identifies him as a type of insect. He then interviews Yamato but remains silent. Afterwards, Lee test the strength of each insect by throwing a shuriken at each one. Yamato defenses himself by using his Wood Release.

Episode 48

Yamato Gets a Mission

After finishing his mission, Yamato is assigned to meet up with Lee, Tenten, and Sai at a hideout to retrieve a forbidden scroll. In the end, Yamato arrives and makes an opening for the team to escape. Yamato then flies away with the team using Lee's eyebrows.

Leaf Village of the Dead

After being possessed by Orochimaru, Yamato says that he will crush the writers at the studio for not allowing him to speak in the spin-off.

Trivia

  • According to the Naruto series, Anbu use code names to conceal their identity. During his time as an Anbu, Yamato used to go by the name Tenzō (テンゾウ, Tenzō) and during his time as a team leader, he is referred to as Yamato (ヤマト, Yamato). Since "Yamato" and "Tenzō" are actually codenames given to him, his real name is unknown.
