Shikamaru Nara (奈良シカマル, Nara Shikamaru) is a supporting character of the series. He is a member of Team Asuma.

To further emphasis his personality, Shikamaru is regularly seen with a lazy or irritated expression. He has shoulder length black hair tied in a spiky ponytail and narrow brown eyes. Like his teammates, he wears stud earrings. Among the members of Konoha 11, he is the only one to sport an attire more mirroring the standard Konohagakure shinobi: he wears his flak jacket, along with a black long sleeved shirt paired with matching pants and sandals, and green lined mesh armor on his wrists and ankles. The placement of his forehead protector can be seen on his left arm, but only the metal part is visible, seemingly sewn onto the shirt itself.

Regardless of his super intelligence with an I.Q. of over 200, Shikamaru preferred not to get involved in "troublesome" activities, pretending to be busy to avoid responsibility. He also does not like fighting, deeming it, as he does most things, "troublesome". He is fully aware of this side of his personality. He even named himself "the number one at running away" or "the number one coward". In fact, his most commonly used phrase is "how troublesome" in the Japanese version, and "what a drag" in the English version. He is best friends with Choji Akimichi.

Nara Clan Techniques

Shikamaru using the Shadow Imitation Technique.

Shikamaru's signature move is the Shadow Imitation Technique. The technique allows him to attach his shadow to a target's, forcing them to make whatever move he makes. Along with manipulating people, he can also form his shadows into tendrils for physical attacks.

Shikamaru thinking

Shikamaru thinking.

Shikamaru's greatest advantage in battle is his mental capacity. Shikamaru is an astonishing genius with an IQ of over 200. When formulating his plans, Shikamaru is naturally calm and is able to make accurate choices. Once he is completely focused, he is usually seen closing his eyes and cupping his fingers. Once this has been done, he can quickly think of at least twenty moves ahead of his opponent and predict any possible moves the opponent might make. He is also capable of luring in his opponents into a trap. Due to his intelligence, Shikamaru finds battling his opponents to be simple.

Teamwork Symbolizes Youth

When Team Guy are struggling to defeat a group of missing-nin, Shikamaru and Chōji step in and subdue them. Later, the two teams eat at Yakiniku Q. Lee asks Shikamaru and Chōji if they can give him and Neji training on teamwork. After Chōji tells Lee that he and Shikamaru used to eat snacks when they were little, Lee tries to feed Neji the last piece of meat, which makes Chōji angry as he tried to reach for it. Chōji then challenges Lee and Neji. Shikamaru found this to be a way to work on teamwork.

The drill was to have Lee and Neji take the bells away from them. Shikamaru starts off by going into his thinking position and strategists 200 tactics. Shikamaru orders Chōji to distract them while he sets up his trap. Later, while setting up his trap, Lee is sent flying into the trap and sets it off. Shikamaru then tells the two that there is no way they could work together the way he and Chōji do. As Shikamaru and Chōji make their escape, Neji sends Lee flying, and ends up crashing into them. Due to this action, the bell flies away and lands into a nearby river. Shikamaru then calls the drill a draw.

After the fight, Chōji forgives Lee and Neji for the incident back at Yakiniku Q. After using the Partial Multi-Size Technique, Lee calls Chōji a "fatty-of-all-trades" which angers him and causes Chōji to use the Human Bullet Tank and roll over them. Shikamaru comments on this being troublesome.
